Just wanted to jump in here to give further assistance. If the instructions do not require the numbering, then do not put it. If you are required to do the assignment in essay form, numbering in essays are done as the following:

Secondly or Next,
Numbers are not necessary unless you are providing a list of items and thus you using a colon and the phrase "as the following" "are the following", etc.
